It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our esteemed founding partner, Alan D. Hoffenberg, who passed away on April 8, 2025.
A dedicated attorney, tireless advocate, and compassionate counselor, Alan was a pillar of the Chicago legal community and a respected leader in the field of matrimonial and family law. For over fifty years, he devoted his professional life to helping individuals and families navigate some of the most challenging moments in their lives. With his unmatched ability to communicate, his rigorous legal mind, and his fierce dedication to justice, Alan built a legacy of excellence and integrity that continues to define Hoffenberg & Block, LLC.
Alan began his legal career in personal injury litigation, but soon found his calling in family law—a field where he could apply both his courtroom skills and his deep empathy. Prior to establishing Hoffenberg & Block in 2013, Alan was a partner at several well-respected family law firms, including Alan D. Hoffenberg & Associates. As a founding partner of Hoffenberg & Block, he was known for handling complex divorce and custody cases with precision, professionalism, and compassion. He represented clients from all walks of life, including high-net-worth individuals with intricate estates, business interests, and custody issues, always striving for the most favorable outcome while minimizing the emotional toll on families.
Throughout his distinguished career, Alan earned the respect of his peers, judges, and clients alike. He was a Fellow and Past President of the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, an organization in which he was actively involved for many years. His professional affiliations also included the Illinois State Bar Association, Chicago Bar Association, American Bar Association, International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and the Lake County Bar Association.
Alan was a frequent lecturer and a regular contributor to legal education seminars. He was proud to share his knowledge and help elevate the standards of family law practice. His numerous accolades include being named an Illinois Super Lawyer every year since the designation’s inception, as well as contributing to Hoffenberg and Block’s recognition as one of Chicago’s top divorce and family law firms. In addition, Alan was a great mentor to young attorneys, and always willing to take the time to pass his endless legal knowledge onto the next generation.
Above all, Alan will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his clients, his profound sense of justice, and the kindness and dignity with which he treated everyone he encountered.
Alan’s absence will be deeply felt by his colleagues, clients, and the broader legal community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.
